UGANDA MARTYRS UNIVERSITY P.O. BOX 5498 KAMPALA, UGANDA Wealth Creation: Training in Microbanking in a Developing Country and The Contribution of Uganda Martyrs University This paper has four parts. In the first part, we will briefly review the history of development finance since the end of the Second World War and show how thinking progressed to a point where microbanking came into being. The second part of the paper will focus on the ‘what’ and ‘why of microbanking, and the success of Uganda’s premier mircrobank, Centenary Rural Development Bank (CERUDEB. The third part of the paper will examine why so many of its challenges for sustaining its mission revolve around the issue of ‘training’. Lastly, we will see how one Catholic institution of higher learning, Uganda Martyrs University, became involved in banking training and what our contribution is to management training through the partnership that has been forged with CERUDEB.
